internal modem not recognized.

Hello.

I'm looking for a series of steps that I may try in order to rectify the following problem. I don't expect a specific answer (although if you give me one, i'd be obliged), but rather some ideas of things to try.

BACKGROUND
originally I had a plain ol' us robotic internal 56k phone modem. It worked fine. The cable company came in and installed a cable modem, but took out the original phone modem. That works fine also.

GOAL

to reinstall the phone modem on an open slot on my motherboard and use it in conjunction with the cable modem so I can dial into a LAN

PROBLEM

I installed the internal modem on an open slot. It seems like ME doesn't even know that it's there. It doesn't seem to let me load the software for the modem.

would someone with some experience in ME give me any tips as to where to look to begin troubleshooting?

Have you tried control panel, install new hardware wizard or even control panel, modem, and see what your modem settings if ME doesn't recognise it.
Do you have the installation disk for the modem still. The ME driver aren't too compatible at the moment.
I actually lost my modem totally for 36 hours under ME and then it came back all of sudden. I don't understand why.
You can also go My Computer, right click, properties and you'll see all your device settings.
Should be able to access it through one of those places surely.

Modems have always been problematic for me on all Window OS's. It takes trail and error even if it is pug and play.
Try manipulating disabelin all com ports in the bios. Use add new hardware, Sometimes it takes alot of frustration and lots of patience. Iv,e had luck by intsalling modem on all available com ports then deletin the ones Idon,t want.
