Wired for Management (WfM)
Over the last several years, the PC industry has rallied around the Wired for Management (WfM) initiative. This has resulted in millions of PCs enabled with built-in features that offer valuable manageability functionality, including instrumentation, use of the network as a boot device, remote wake-up, and power management. These standards-based features have also been embraced and supported by numerous suppliers of manageability software and operating systems.
The Microsoft Windows* Logo Program System and Device Requirements 2.0 has been released, and addresses the essential manageability elements of WfM. PCs that successfully complete the tests in the current version of the Microsoft Windows XP Hardware Compatibility Test Kit (HCT), version 10.0 or greater, should represent the same levels of built-in manageability features as WfM-enabled PCs.
To assist Information Technology professionals in identifying WfM-enabled PC models, Intel has maintained a listing of PC models that successfully passed the tests in our Toolkit. Since most major OEMs are targeting Windows XP and many have already satisfied these requirements, there is no longer a need for a separate WfM self-test or for a separate listing of WfM-enabled systems. Even a business not migrating to Windows XP may consult Microsoft's list to determine and evaluate the capabilities of particular PC models.
The WfM Self-Test ToolKit is no longer supported and PC manufacturers should reference the "Designed for Windows XP" logo program for the Microsoft Windows XP HCT for testing tools.
The listing of WfM-enabled systems was "frozen" on December 7th 2001. If the systems that you are looking for do not appear on that list you may want to search for systems on the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) that have the Designed for Windows XP Logo and are Windows Logo Program V2.0 Compliant* which should represent the same levels of built-in manageability features as WfM 2.0 enabled PCs.
