InteleControl/ Switch View E-mail Notification.

I have just taken over support of our InteleControl System and we have stopped recieving e-mails of error messages from our server. I have no knowledge of Unix and the person who supported the server before is no longer with the company.
Can anyone help with where I should begin to look at the problem? We are using some sort of Pop Mail.

post office protocol works for inbound mail.. check the link between the two for errors.. trying pinging the interface (port 21) from the mail server
