Hi,

I'm in the process of pricing up various parts for an upgrade.

The components I've chosen are:

Intel 3.2 Ghz Prescott CPU
Nexus PHT 3600 Skive Tech Silent Pentium 4 Heat Sink & Fan
SATA DiamondMax Plus9 200Gb HDD
1GB DDR PC3200 RAM
Giga-byte GA-8IPE1000 PRO-G Motherboard.

I just have a few questions that I am hoping you guys (and gals) will be able to answer.

1. Am I right to think that just because my motherboard supports SATA Raid, I am still able to connect up a single SATA HDD drive and use that as my main drive.

2. I have a 300Watt PSU that I purchased about 4 years ago when I first built my current system. I have just been reading that the new Intel Prescott processor requires significantly more power. Any ideas if my current PSU will be able to cope?

3. The Nexus Heat sink and Fan is said to handle P4's upto 3.2 Ghz. However, I understand that the Prescott runs at a much higher temperature and so I am wondering if this will be able to cope?

Many thanks for your help.

Well read my thread about "taming the prescot flametrower" about one or two pages back in the same column. Your PSU is definetely not sufficient, you need at least 400 watts and even that would be very marginal. We are talking about 60 to 70 amperes on the 3.3 volt line for the 3.2 E chip. My chip is the 3.6E and uses measured 85.8 amperes. Try the nexus heat sink but I believe your temperature will go to over 70 degrees and reach the shut off point. Your sata drive will work fine as a single drive if you set it up as normal. Good luck with your future heat problem. Regards
