hey everyone,

i am trying to enable instant messaging on my new exchange 2000 server, but it's really ticking me off.

at first i thought i'd just try my own thing, but it failed miserably, so i fell back to the test setup that microsoft includes with the exchange 2000 help.

i followed everything exactly as it was printed. i set up a home server called HomeServer1, enabled myself and one other person to use it as the messaging homeserver, and tried logging in from windows 98 client machines. i get the following error:

exchange instant messaging authentication failure
the person logged on to this computer does not have permission to use the specified e-mail address. please supply an e-mail address and logon credentials for that address.

it's aggravating. perhaps i am not logging in correctly? the full domain name for my server is win2ksrv.network.mycompany.com

here is how i'm logging in:
e-mail: homer15@mycompany.com
user name: homer15
password: ***********
domain: mycompany.com

ok, the username and the domain are tricky. i have tried many different things from things that i've read. here are some username variations:
homer15
homer15@win2ksrv
homer15@homeserver1

and for the domain, i've tried the fqdn of the server, homeserver1, and mycompany.com.

could someone please help me, or try to steer me in the right direction? thanks in advance.
