I want to install and run Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition as a workgroup and not a domain. At the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Setup - Internal Domain Information window when I delete the entries in Full DNS name for internal domain window the Next button is grayed out. Is there a way to bypass making the server a domain controller and install the Microsoft SQL Server component?

If so, what are the disadvantages of htis choice?

Thanks, Ed

I'm not sure - although I wouldn't be suprised. The licensing is quite tight for SBS and I'd imagine MS have something along the lines of not using it for just one thing. (Because you're not allowed to install SBS on multiple machines to spread the roles - all the eggs in one basket or nothing at all)

If you've got time to play / test then possibly try installing it as a DC and then try demoting it. Keep SQL as SQL Authentication though. (E.G. Know the SA!)

Good Luck,

Steve.

The posters explain why SBS cannot be used as a workgroup, and suggest that if a workgroup server is required then the standard W2K3 OS is used.
