Hi

I have Windows 98 SE installed on my laptop in German. I have now received Windows 2000 in English. Can I install it over Win98?. Will Windows be installed twice, i.e. 2 x the amount of disk space?

Thanks

Hans

You can either install it instead of Windows 98, so it will write over your current installation and so only use a bit more space, or you can set it up as a dual boot system, with both Win98 and Win2000 installed, which will use (more than) twice the space....

It will upgrade Win98 but IMHO it is better to do a clean install. It will boot from the CD as long as it is bootable.
Every day above ground is a GOOD DAY!!!

i thot a fdisk was necessary as the file systems are different, is this not so?

Windows 98 is DOS based and uses FAT and FAT32 HD File Allocation Tables.

Windows 2000 is Based on Windows NT and uses FAT, FAT32, and NTFS5.

If install Windows 2000 it will either replace windows 98 (it is not an upgrade) or you may install it as well as Windows 98 (a dual boot system).

From what you seem to indicate in your original post you want to replace Windows 98. If you do so, be advised that none of your current software links will be transferred because the registry systems and base OS are totally different. You will be required to then re-install all your current applications as well. Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I second the opinion of a clean install. I just did this and am extremely satisfied with the results. Several people recommended a clean install over the upgrade. Just fdisk your drive, then insert the CD and set your BIOS to boot from the CD; Win2000 will step you through the rest. If the Win2000 is an upgrade instead of a full product, it will ask you for your Win98 CD, so have it ready. Good luck -- it's a nice OS; got rid of my 15-times-a-day blue screen syndrome!
