A friend is currently running windows 98 on their computer but have been infected by virus' a couple of times and while the eradication/fixing software has been run, the computer is behaving strangely, eg. some software cannot be uninstalled, email crashes every time it is opened and now the screen goes blank at the logon screen forcing the user to fiddle around an login in the dark.

I think the best bet is to reinstall the operating system, and in this case because he has windows 2000, install that instead.

I have previously installed windows 2000 overtop of windows 98 without a problem. Simply pop the disk in and follow the menus. In this case, I would like to format the harddrive first, i.e. erase everything, and then install Win2K from there.

I am a bit concerned about doing this because I wonder if I the win2k disk will run from the cd rom after the harddrive has been formatted? or will DOS have to be installed first? or is there some other step. If there is some software I have to install before installing Win2K, please let me know where I can download it.

I suspect that its probably pretty straightforward, but I'm just being cautious before I proceed because he can't afford to have a computer down for 2 or 3 days as we fiddle with it. We have the win2K quickstart guide that comes with the OS but it doesn't give instructions as to how to install it from a formatted hard drive.

Please list the steps required and any potential problem areas. Note - I'd also like to partition his hard drive into two - help on this during the installation procedure would be appreciated.

Thanks a alot!

On the W2K cd is a makeboot folder which allows making a set of four disks in case the motherboard does not support cd-rom boot.
With either the disk and/or cd install you are given the option to partition the drive in any size you want along with the format option of fat32 or ntfs.
As long as your PC meets the HCL there should be no real problem unless you are running ATA 100 and then you will need the drivers for that.
If memory serves the option of making the boot disks can be done from the run command by typing the cd-rom letter and bootdisk/makeboot (d:\bootdisk/makeboot).

1. Before formating... boot the computer with the W2000 CD (change the BIOS boot option priority to CD first). If this boots, then you are sure.. you can bbot the unit with CD..

Then switch off/reboot and format...

2. If you boot from CD (W2000), you sure get a chance to format the whole drive.

3. In any case, you can create a Bootable floppy with win98 and with system .. config.sys.. autoexec.bat... related drivers to use the CD etc.. (If you want to be absolutely safe).

Hope this helps :) ramani :-9
