I am about tho upgrade our server to Win 2000 Advanced Server from Win 2000 Pro. I can not afford to have the network down for more than one day. What are the unknowns that I need to research before I upgrade? Are there any auxilary applications that I must have? Any tips that may be available from anyone with previous experience would be helpful.

Please advise. Turbo

Hi,
as pointed out by 'Wardo' you cannot upgrade from PRO to any of the SERVER versions, as they are quite different products. You have to do a clean, fresh install.
Microsoft recommends 256Mb RAM for the SERVER version of Windows so be prepared to have 512Mb or more for the ADVANCED SERVER as it loads a hell of alot more services by default.

Just out of curiosity, why ADVANCED SERVER? Are you going to install it in a machine with more than 4 processors?

Perhaps the most important decision you have to make at install time is whether to use the server as a domain controler or as a workgroup, after that, installation is pretty much straight foward, and you could have the server back up in 3/4 hours.

Hope it helps.

Good question about Advanced Server, I discovered today that server will do the trick.

I want to run the server with as little maintenance as possible. I also want to build a platform that will allow for web stie managment later. Any ideas.

Please advise. Turbo

I have a related question currently I am running ms exchange 2000 on server and a memory error that microsoft states in order to fix you need advanced server. I already tried on a test system an in place upgrade. It promptly told me that I must do a clean install. Do you know any ways around this?
