I've got a buddy who wants to reinstall W2K on his desktop to take care of some corrupted OS issues. Opening the box o' stuff from the computer store, he finds he has W2K SERVER instead of W2K Pro!!! Naturally, the store is long since out of business. My question: what would it really hurt if we did a clean install of server on this box? I mean, W2K is essentially W2K, right?

I thought about offering the use of my W2K CD, but it isn't happy with his "home made" PC and insists that it is for a Dell only (which is what I have).

Any advice most welcome here!

Its not an issue to install the server OS so long as the PC has enough RAM, CPU and Hard Disk space to handle it. After Install you will want to make sure that all of the extra services are stopped and disabled so that they don't use up the system resources, and make sure to not install any components that won't be needed. i.e. IIS.
