I had a class for SQL over a year ago. Now I am trying to install my first SQL server box. I remember something about now using the windows authentication for the password in Service Settings (I think). The book shows that they entered a user created in Active Directory, but didn't say what rights were needed for that user.

I know this is a very simple question, but I feel very clueless right now. I would appreciate any help that I can get. Also, if there are any other pieces of advice, I would take that also.

Thanks in advance.

Use an account with administrator rights, either domain or local.

That account does not need any administrator rights. It needs the rights to log on as a service, and act as part of the OS. These rights will be granted to it by the installer when you install SQL.

Granting the SQL Server more rights than it needs is a major security hole.
