Installing solaris 8 on a laptop. 1

Is there any means off installing solaris standard machine configuration for my laptop. Just the way you can do it in windows 2000 and choose a standard HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). The laptop boots from the CD then just loads the debugger. I am a newbie in solaris.

Very, very few laptops are supported by Solaris. Some that do are the Toshiba Tecras and some Fujitsu. Your first stop on this trail should be Hardware Compatibility Lists to establish that Sol8 will install at all on your particular laptop.

From the symptom, I'd say that you probably are out of luck this time. Ian

debugger ... sounds like the ACPI problem ... btw anyone managed to install Solaris on a dell 4100 (my boss has one, and has found 2 people that have managed to install solaris, but his ACPI stops him doing it ... even at different BIOS revisions ...) ... blah blah blah

if it goes debugger then the kernel won't boot ... until they bring out one that does you're unlikely ever to install solaris.

I have now got an acer laptop.. for test purposes alot more hard disk space.. and alot more processor power..

its installing... comming up with some funny errors at the moment,, but its installing.. 8)

wahey..

the questions that are arising are

1,are there any default shares in solaris that u can map to, ie in nt u have c$ admin$... if not how do i share something out,..

2, how do i map to another computer share,, using solaris..

For the video problem patch 109401 add support for many recent graphic adapters like Nvidia Gforce family, Ati Radeon, Matrox G400, etc, for cards not supported by Sun native drivers you can use the Solaris Xfree86 Drivers Porting Kit, so if is supported by Xfre86 is supported by Solaris x86, get your kit at:

For ACPI problem, in some motherboards, ACPI probe method used by Solaris x86 installation may cause hangs, you can try forcibly disabling acpi, get a DCA boot floppy then edit "/solaris/bootenv.rc" on the floppy and add the line:

setprop acpi-user-options '0x2'

For sound support, if you card is not supported, you can use the open sound drivers from 4Front technologies, you can get your trial version for Solaris x86 at:

The network problem is the worst, Solaris has excellent support for just about any intel network card, the Realtek 8139 is also supported if you download the driver for Solaris x86 from Realtek web site, for laptops with a Mini PCI capable you can buy a Intel, the 3com 3C589C or 3C589D pcmia is also supported but this is a 10Mbits one and in some cases you will need to use a patch from Xig, you can get the patch at:
