Installing software for multiple users??

Hi can anyone help me i am trying to install office 2000 on winxp pro i can install it as the administrator all is ok but multiple users are to use the machine and when any 1 but the administrator trys to use office it goes to reinstall office then it works this happens every time you use it?.Also frontpage express trys to right to the registry when users open it up but that is ok for admin?

You need to make sure that the 'users' have the correct rights(admin). If you need help on how to take care of it, let me know.

Hi

For Office try giving everyone full access rights to the office directory and for Front Page Express do the same for the reg key that it is trying to access.

Nice 1 thanks for the info but still having problems .I have given everyone full access to the program files folder the office folder and even the c drive still the same if you click cancel when the installer pops up the program works ???

You need to use regedit to give them access to the registry keys for office.

It shouldn't involve any registry mods. You simply need to just give the 'username' full access to the computer. If you hit the control panel, and choose User Accounts, you'll see an option to 'Add Users for this computer'. Just add the 'username', and then under the 'Group Membership', there's a drop down box. Choose the 'Administrators' option. That should take care of the problem. Let me know if that takes care of it.

The computers are school computers so there is around 1000 kids going to use these machines so i cant make every 1 a admin account ? i have gave full permissions on the office registry keys for 1 test user who has admin rights and that is the same??????

well, if there are going to be tons of people using the computers, then just create 1 account. then setup the account with rights, so that it's able to be logged in at numerous computers. do you have active directory at all?

I think you confused us into assuming this was just a local machine.

The fact that you have 1,000 possible users changes things in important ways.

To give you a good answer you need to supply:

1. Are the computers on a Domain? If so, what server OS is involved;

2. Do you want local profiles kept on each machine, or do you need roaming profiles?

3. Is the user going to be able to make changes in their profiles, and this will be saved; or do you want an identical profile every logon?

4. Is the user going to be able to save files on the system hard drives?

5. Is every user to have a unique logon name and password, or are you intending to use a generic username and password?

We have windows nt as domain controller with 150-win98 systems and 50 new xp systems.Tryed to use star office but got simmilar problems you need to install it for all users so back to microsoft and that dont work ???

Yes every user has a unique logon name and password and win xp is using roaming profiles they have there own area on the server for there work they can not save or even see the c: drive.

Are you sure you're not using mandatory profiles or a policy which prevents saving changes to configuration (because if you were, it would explain what you're getting - its normal to 'install' office for each user, settings are save in their user area. But if their user area is NOT being saved at end of session - back to square one).

We use software called lan ranger which restricts what they can do and cant do i have removed this so it is just a plain xp machine i have right mouse clicked on the office folder and the programs files folder and under security selected everyone and given them full rights .I think it is roaming profiles there is a copy on the server and one in the xp documents and settings folder??sorry dont no much about profiles or xp?

Do their roaming profiles on the server contain ntuser.dat or ntuser.man? If the second - mandatory profiles - there's your problem.
I don't think its a file/folder permissions thing. Office 2000 is designed to fit into 2k/XP security, where it will be installed by an Adminstrator but used by Users. I don't know what lan ranger does - but it sounds a bit like policies (just had a look on their website - but found only general description - they may use policies or their own equivalent to implement some of their features).

If the policy clears profile changes upon logoff, or the profile is mandatory, Office is going to demand a reinstallation every logon.

Sorry got a bit confused the profiles are created on the local machine when you log on they have ntuser.dat in there i copyied the ntuser.dat from admin to test account .Office then works after it trys to reinstall itself about 3 times then if you close office the same again you have to open it about 3 times?

I'm not crazy about the idea of copying ntuser.dat from other accounts, except as detailed by Microsoft:

Perhaps it's an issue with Windows Installer. If so, there is a Cleanup Utility that should help.

In our office we set up each user's Office 2000/XP info on his or her machine--if we have generic machines that many people might use (i.e. for training purposes), we set up a generic profile so that it doesn't have to be set up for a hundred different people over the course of year.

Thanks for all the help sorted it install all your software as administrator and printers then view all files copy all files out of administrators profile into default users and any users profile. Seems to do the trick now any 1 can use the printers and office.
