It's installed by default. Check your IIS and see if it's running. Also, try from any machine on your network go to http:\\"ip of your server"/exchange and it should come up with a username and password dialogue box. Put your username and password in and it should display your inbox. Hope it helps.
one way to lock it down would be to get a certificate for your server so that users on the outside transmissions will be encrypted. Then you would only have to open port 443 to the server from the outside and nothing else. This will help to secure it.
I've done this on a Exchange 2k server. It works pretty good. But I just created my own certificate since it will be for internal use only. That way you still get the encryption. There are extensive instructions here:
