I'm trying to install nt4 server on an old ibm rs6000 7043-143 machine. Have been googling all day and not found much to help me.

When I load it up and tell it to boot of the nt4 cd I have it doesnt seem to read it as a bootable cd. Could be the cd drive just doesnt support it.

I also read that you needed an arc boot disk from ibm to get it to work, I located it, made the disk, booted and it just frezes at the begining.

What options do I have?

(the nt4 cd is an old select cd with the i386, alpha, ppc and mips version in it)

Elvar the older RS6000s only supported AIX (regardless of the PPC processor). Why would you want to install NT 4 on it anyway. I would rather tinker with AIX only to learn Unix. You can install NT on any run of the mill desktop (older vintage preferable)

I have to agree with itsp1965. It seems almost a crime to load nt on a ibm designed for aix. I would suggest any other old piece of equipment to fill this role, if you really need it.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Its solved now, I found the aix cd's :)

The thing was that we were buying two new servers and the deal we got is get a huge discounts by giving the seller an old server instead. So we had to put some server OS on the servers we were giving away, along with wiping the disk before ofcorse. The only OS I could find in the house was nt4, also found some linux versions but none of them worked.

I finaly found the aix install cd's in the basement and installing worked like a charm :)
