just wondering if it's possible to install a 5.1 UPGRADE version on a new "blank" server (with DOS installed of course) without having a previous netware OS installed. i would like to try a clean (or "new server") install of 5.1 on the new server rather than a migration. If this is possbile, what are some of the pitfalls of this way of installing. (i'm basing this idea on how one can clean install Win9.x upgrade without having a previous version installed, just need a "disk 1", or an .ini file.

currently have a 3.11 netware file server running on an Pentium 60 (IDE/coax network) to 2 old workstations (a x386, P60). The 5.1 upgrade install will be on a new server class pIII 800 (SCSI/Ethernet), with 2 Win98 workstations. (the new server/software hasn't come in yet, so haven't been able to experiment with this.)

The current data on the old server is about 120MB worth of files. There about 5 users to set up profiles for. With this few users and data, that's why I considered trying to install clean, rather than migrate across-the-wire. Plus, the old server/workstations will be "retired" after this upgrade.

You can create a new server from an upgrade BUT you will run into a licensing issue. Once you have the the upgrade and you will need to give them an old serial number and the upgrade serial number. Novell will then issue an activation key which you will need to complete the licensing porocess.

Without this you will not be able to have more than 1 (or 2) users login to the "new" server.

Thanks for the help. licensing is not a problem. The 3.1 Netware currently has a 3 user license. the 5.1 Netware will have 5 user license. I still have access to all the original disks of the 3.1, including serial numbers/license disk. Since I have yet to receive the new server/software, not sure what I will be getting, but should be 5.1 upgrade version with 5 user license. Unfortunately, I wasn't the one who installed the 3.1 server, but I will be the one to install the 5.1.

So, as I understand it, I can do a "clean install" with the upgrade version, without needing a previous netware OS on the new server. I just need the license disks and serial numbers (and of course a DOS boot disk).

The authorization key, will that come from Novell, or will that number be provided somehwere on the disks/install package? (this will be my first novell install, so i'm not familiar with the install process)

You need to go to Novell's web site to get the activation key
ther you will eneter the old serial no. and the new serial no. it will generate the activation key.

Now to the legal issues. The NetWare 3.1, 3 user version is probably a demo version and will not have a valid serial no. All the 3 user versions that are around are Novell demo products and are NOT FOR RESALE and are not upgradeable. So more than likely you will NOT be able to get a valid activation key and you will have a 1 user version of NetWare 5.

i went back and checked the 3.1 netware licenses, and they are real licenses, not demo. it seems the company ordered 3 licenses since there were only going to be two users at that time (one xtra license just in case). so the install should do OK :)

once the server comes in, i'll let you know how it turns out as an FYI. thanks for your help.

I am having my disks replaced on a Netware 5.1 host. What would be good tool to do data migration to new disk? Can this be done online?

How did all this come out with installing netware 5.1 upgrade using license from netware 3.1? We have a similar situation. We have a 250 user version of 3.2 and we want to use that license to do a clean install of 5.1 upgrade to only 5 users. We are retiring the server containing the 250 user license and will no longer use it.

fbizzell, All you have to do is order a NetWare 5.1 Server + 5 user upgrade from a Novell reseller. If you need to prove you had a prior version, Novell should have you on record (Unless you bought Redbox Licensing).
