Installing a Microsoft USB Mouse?

I just got a new Microsoft Intellimouse, though I have no disk with it. I downloaded drivers from Microsoft, but they haven't been any help yet. All I get is an unknown USB device. I try updating the driver under Windows 98 SE, but all I get are generic USB driver options; the USB mouse drivers are located under the mouse device grouping, which does me no good since all I can access when trying to update the driver is the USB Device grouping.

Any help? I'm running an FIC AD11 motherboard.

did you download the correct driver?
there is "optical intellimouse" and just "intellimouse"

go into device manager and remove all your mouse devices.
also remove your usb root hub plus any other usb stuff.
now reboot your computer. it will now find the new items and install the devices for it. does it work now?

I deleted all usb drivers in the system panel and rebooted my system. Initially the mouse did work, but soon after Windows found the new usb ports and started installing the drivers. Upon installation my mouse stopped working. What I had to do was I went into the windows\inf directory and deleted any file that began with usb or via. Rebooting, the system found the usb ports but couldn't install any drivers. My mouse now works.

This can't be a permanent solution, but for now it's fine, I have no other usb devices. I probably can install one of the ports, keeping the other as an 'unsupported device', there's no question that I want to keep this mouse; comparing to my old serial mouse, this new usb mouse is just soooo much smoother.
