I want to install Server 2008 over windows xp on my laptop,during installation is there a option to rollback to xp? It wouldn't kill me to format and install,but I'd like to know if there is that option.

installing 2008 Server over Windows XP

Cant install it over XP, XP isnt upgradable to a server class OS, you would have to destroy the XP install. Might be able to dual boot it but thats just a hassle. Why dont you install it in vmware following the tutelage of itsp1965:
