internet connection was great...installed SP2...couldn't connect to any sites from any type browser (IE, Moz, Netscape)...turned off firewall...still nothing...ran spy sweeper...nothing detected...

restored back to right before SP2 install...everything fine now...

what's the deal?

im not running any av software and the only firewall is the windows one

With SP2 installed:

1. Use Device Manager and uninstall the network adapter. Reboot and let the New Hardware Wizard redetect the device. It would benefit you to search for an updated driver for the network adapter. Many network adapter driver sets were updated post-SP2.

2. Then, Start, Run, CMD
netsh winsock reset catalog

Wait for the prompt to reset your machine. Reboot the machine.
