Hey all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has seen or had this problem or anything like it before. I just got a new computer and have been loading it with software. Everything was going fine until I installed SQL Server 2000. After I installed, it appeared everything was fine. I still had my internet connection and could surf freely. But just randomly and withour error or warning I would lose my connection without prompt or error. Now I say lose my connection loosely b/c my PC would still show my connection as being 'up' but I could not connect to any web sites or ping anything and repairing my tcp/ip connection always failed, but it still showed my as sending and receiving packets.

Then I would try doing an ipconfig /release and then /renew and it always failed when it tried to renew my ip address. I tried pulling the power on my cable modem and then pluggin it back in but that still didnt work, it would show my connection as being up, but still no ability to search sites.

The only thing that seemed to work was restarting the computer. After reboot, the connection would come back up and everything worked fine, for a little while at lease and then I would lose the connection again in the same manner. So I uninstalled SQL Server and everything appears to be fine. Not sure what was going on. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try to install it once more. Also, are you running Win 2K Pro or Server. Really shouldn't matter, I believe SQL can run on either just fine. Maybe you just had a bad install the first time around, and download the latest Service Pack for SQL. One other thing you might look at if it happens again is the Event Viewer. See if any messages correlate with the timing of the problem.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Matt:

I am running windows xp pro. I have tried to install it a couple of times with the same results, each time I follow up the install with Service Pack 1, which I have on disk as well. Any chance the SP could be the problem?

Also, I have watched the event viewer like a hawk and have gotten no pertinent information from it.

BCastner:

That utility looks like its worth a shot, ill give it a go.

Thanks guys.

So try it without the SP. See if it still does it. And the Winsock utility is not a bad idea either.
