Hi,

I don't usually post here as I don't work with Symposium, but I require the application installed on a server. This is in a coorporate environment and I am not the one doing the installation (I don't have access to the box). The version that is being installed is 04.01.07 of the Symposium Call Center Server Client. It is being installed on a virtual server running Windows 2000 server (Vmware box).

During installation, the ASE application (ASE 12.0 PC Client) will not install. Our installation guide that went through QA and which should work states that ASE should already be installed on the server, which is not the case. In this case, it says that the application will install but after a few seconds returns an error message saying it failed and it will revert to it's previous state. At this point, the server administator always restores the server from backup to a previous state so it will be clean on re-attempt. He did 4 attempts and all failed. I looked here and noticed someone saying that with PIV's you might have problem so I had him do what the TEkTips FAQ states and copy the directory of the software to the D: drive and install it from there. He attempted this but it failed again.

While searching I found a second workaround but this was for Windows 2000 Pro / XP and involved downloading executing a file which unfortunately we cannot do without going through QA and doing software release (which would take weeks).

Would anyone have any idea as to how to install this software? It is required because the server is a Crystal Enterprise 10 server which will need to be able to connect to the Symposium server using the Sybase ODBC... It was installed successfully on a test server at some point in time but this was done before either myself or the server administrator started working here.

Thanks in advance,
Phil

Symposium Client will not install on Symposium Call Center Server (only on standalone machine)!!! It's well known problem for Sybase database client software.

For correctly installation of Symposium Client make next simple steps:
1) Set TEMP and TMP environment variables to some path without spaces (for examplee, c:\Temp)
2) Reboot workstation
3) Install Symposium Client software

Enjoy :)

The machine is not a SCCS (I used SCCS as the application name but should have said SCCS client)- it's a Crystal Enterprise Server where I need the symposium client installed to connect to Symposium to gather data.

I should have said client in my subject line, it is not the server but the client.

As to your solution, if the environment variable for the system (and not user I gather?) is set to D:\Temp and then a reboot is done plus installation, this should work? I really hope it will be that simple!

It will be attempted tommorow at this time as I now have to sit down with the server administrator to explain exactly what I need and why :p

You'd shouldn't need to set up Symposium client on the Server in able to connect. The reason many people do, is it sticks in all the information for you (ODBC connections etc). I personally haven't done this in years, but I'm sure someone here could point you to somewhere you get get the connection info.

Stu..

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

??????? user env. variable TMP and TEMP should be deleted. Only system env. variables must be present. its really working solution!

Ok great, I will have that done tommorow morning. Stu, if I find someone who can explain how to connect to the server without the installation, all the better, but everyone here has the application installed so no one is forthcoming with instructions.

Your can connect to the Sybase server and install only Sybase drivers, which are included to the Nortel Client Software kit (folde ASE...), without Nortel Client Software. I am doing such way at all client machines which need to access to the Sybase Adaptive SQL Server.

I talked with the server guy this morning. Installation of Sybase failed again. The environment variable is C:/temp with no spaces. Installation was attempted on the D: drive as the C: drive on these machine is the strict minimum.

We think the problem might be that this is a virtual machine running Windows 2000 server. It's also on a Xeon processor and not a P-IV as I originally thought (which makes sense considering they run 8 virtual machines per server)... Does anyone here have it running on something similar? We will contact our third level support and see if they can give us some insight.

Thanks,
Phil

Where located your symposium Client installation: on CD or on the hard drive? If installation files located on the hard drive, write me full path to this files.

The installation files are on CD. The ASE client was copied to hard drive to D:/ASE from where he ran it.

With installation path all ok (path don't contain spaces and long directory names). Do you testing this installation on the real PC (don't inside VMWare environment)?

That is our problem actually, prior to the environment all our testing was done in a lab (well, except when it was installed).

They ended up trying a workaround that was on the forum relating to downloading a jre file (or something from Sun anyways) which worked but they had to revert anyways as it did not go through our testing. They will plan an emergency release and will go in this direction.

Thanks much for trying to help though, too bad the simplest solutions did not work in this case...

Regards,
Phil

Try install Sybase Client on standalone PC (for testing purposes). If installation completed correctly then problem in VMWare environment!
