I am doing something wrong! Have gone through this 10 times already with various changes. Using compaq smartStart, have erased configuration, and set up arrays. (Compaq 2DH controller). Want to have a 2 disk mirror, 4 disk RAID 5 and a single drive (page file). Have tried with 3 different W2K install cd's--all end the same way. On the Windows 2000 server Family screen the starting up indicator gets to 2/3 and stops. We have done reboots and gotten past this to add settings, but on the reboot from there, the same thing. Is it a driver issue? Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks.

I would guess that maybe you are having a hardware problem. Remove any uneeded cards...

Also, try to use Compaq SmartStart in different modes: Maybe choose Manual instead of Assisted (or vica versa).

I have installed Windows 2K on these types servers and haven't had any problems. The base hardware should be compatible.

Final thought: Maybe hit the jumper (I think jumper 6 to reset the mother board)

-hope this helps..

Thanks Jpoandl,

Have tried both assisted and manual on SmartStart. No difference. Have another 3000 and several 2500--no problems there. Will try the reset jumper. Also, added drives, but no indication of problem. Also tried a gdisk to clear configuartions before the install. What about a driver issue? can a driver problem show up like that?

Bobbys9,

This is good information. I think you probably have some kind of hardware issue..maybe ram or a third party (non-Compaq) card in the server.

If you use the assisted Smartstart process, all drivers (for Compaq equipment) will get loaded for you. So, I doubt there is driver issue.

My best guess would be that there is some kind of hardware issue. Start by removing most of the ram and uneeded cards from the server. See if Win2K will install...

Another thing you might do is go into the f10 options and disable any ports that your aren't going to use..like the LTP port or any of the COM ports. This might free up some resources on the machine...however, this is a long shot.

Make sure you load your RAID drivers by pressing F6 when you first start up your CD-ROM for your Win2K server setup. It usually should give you a blue screen with an Inaccessible_Device error if you don't install them, but that sometimes depends on the type of card.

You need to get the Windows 2000 drivers from your RAID card vendor and when you first boot up, you'll see: Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver... on the bottom of the screen. Press F6 a few times to make sure you get it and it will eventually ask you to install your third party drivers. Follow the instructions from there.

Make sure you have the latest ROMpaq Install and then use
SmartStart 6+

We've had similar problems in the past and upgrading BIOS & ROMpaqs and then setup with latest SmartStart resolves most of the problems.
