Attempting to install W2K3 on a Compaq proliant 1500. Smart-2DH array controller and 196mb Ram dual 166mhz. Smart Start runs fine and everything is configured, but when the install for W2K3 is ran, when it attempts to start the windows setup it bombs with a BSOD and gives a non-descript Hardware malfunction error. I have tested the controlers and ram, everything checks out ok. NT4.0 runs fine on it, but I would like to try some AD changes without screwing up out existing cluster. Any ideas?

Odds are that the hardware isn't compliant with Windows 2003. Check the HCL on Microsoft.com to see if it is.

Windows 2003 doesn't come with drivers for a lot of the old hardware.

According to HP/CPQ website, their are drivers available for 2003 for this server. I think it might be a problem with the Array driver that is being loaded by default in W2K3. I have tried a few different drivers during the install process with no such luck. I think I will try to install W2K just for giggles

Probably an issue with the original EISA RAID controller that is usually in that server. They can be a bit flaky and drivers aren't that solid.
