How do you install a printer without going into X-Windows? I know how to do it in X but when dialed in remotely X-Windows is not an option. Can any one help me? James Collins

Hi,

Well, if you had redhat 7.2 they have provided a tool called printtool-tui (printtool text utility) which seems to imply that the earlier versions missed out on that. It can be found in the 'printconf' rpm - you'll need to upgrade a lot of other rpms to satisfy the dependencies though. Other than that, you can try editing /etc/printcap by hand (see 'man 5 printcap'). The various print config tools that come with the main distros are listed here --> .

Hope this helps

Another option might be getting the apsfilter script from freshmeat.net.

It does a super job at installing a printer, including setting up the /etc/printcap file. It can be run in console, and its real easy to setup, and it supports a lot of printers.

Hope this is of some help
