I have an older Inspiron 5000e. ORiginally came with w98 . I purchased an OEM XP pro (with a mouse) and am trying to do a full clean install . Everytime I start to copy files , a different file says that it can not be copied, then i get a bsod with a page fault -- different every time. I've tried NTFS & FAT32 and get same results..Any info or tips would be great. We have already increased the memory to 512 -- and everything worked prior to fdisk & format & new install.

Thanks in advance

XP is far more stressfull (critical) on hardware and will soon find fault, if there is one, with a new setup.
The two most likely is that you may have a faulty stick of ram or the CD drive is not reading the information cleanly.
Try removing all but one stick of ram (XP will load with as little as 128mb)

I've seen this happen on slow CPU's (like Pentium 200's)... XP will crap itself on installation if the CPU isn't fast enough.

Also, the minimum RAM according to MS is 256 for running XP, although I have seen it run on 128, but it uses the swap file a LOT.

Just my 2¢

Thank you EVERYONE!!!! The problem was with the memory that I put in -- when I went back to the original 128 all loaded, everything was fine -- now to replace the memory!
