i have the master document in outline view and i insert 3 subdocuments, all of the headers come over nicely. now when i insert the 4th subdocument i encounter a problem. in the 4th subdocument i use different first page header and different odd and even page headers. for some reason the odd and even page header check box does not carry over when i insert into the master document. the check box is not checked off. now when i check it off it applies to whole document and screws up the other headers. Any suggestions any one.

You must make a break, I don´t know the name in english (its not just a side break its called partbreak, its one level higher than sidebreak, or something like that in english...), you find the command on the Insert menu, then choose break... then you get differént choices..... the four alternative in the bottom of the list is good for you, Choose one of the four and it should help you.
Then insert your subdoc

so before i insert the subdocument insert a break

i tried it and no matter what type of break i throw in there it still blows out some of the previous headers, i think the real problem is that when the document is inserted the checkbox for odd/even headers is not carrying over for some reason and i can not figure out why.

I just tried it out, and it worked....
Make the break and tell word in the dialogbox for pageheader not to use same as before.....
If that doesnt help I don´t know what to do, sorry

are you inserting subdocuments through the outline view? what kind of break are you using? do you save the break in the saved document before you insert it as a subdocument?
what i tried like you said was i inserted the 3 subdocuments then i added a section new page break to the master document then i inserted the last sub document and the even odd page headers do not carry over. it is the question of the same as previous, it is the question of carrying over that checkbox. when i view the last subdocuments headers the same as previous is not even check off so it is not carrying over from previous documents and when i then go in check off the odd/even it then blows out the previous headers on the even pages and the same as previous is still not checked off. so i do not know. but thanks

In the master document, check page setup-layout tab. Change the section start option to your choice and also change it to start from this point forward rather than whole document.
