I have a client who is running Win 98. Problem is that when she is attempting to print a large document from Word Perfect, Legal Edition, she gets a “user.exe” error message and recommends increasing the Stack Size.

I thought that the STACK=*** was in the Win.ini file, but I can’t find it. I have run a sysedit and search all frames but can’t find it. Even tried the “help” but when I do a search for “Stack” I get 0 results.

I have worked with the stack before, but it’s been quite a while. What am I missing?

Open System.ini in Notepad, and in the [386enh] section, put this: MinSPs=8
Restart. Cheers,
Jim

Jim,
Thanks, but here’s the bug. In the System.ini file, [386enh] is not even referenced. I knew MS was doing away with some items in 98, but. . .

In her System.ini file, the only thing that refers to ‘386’ is 386Grabber=vgafull.3gr

Also, I thought stack size was referred as STACK=0,0 ?

Jim,

The pitfalls of trying to do ten things at once. Ignore the last message. I didn't have the frame expanded all the way :~/ !!

But I still thought that stack was STACK=0,0? What changed? Home: SRFlanigan@home.com

Add the statement: STACKS=9,256 to your config.sys file, reboot and try it again. You can change the values of the stacks statement to a maximum of 16,512 where the first number is the NUMBER of stacks and the second is the size (in bytes)...but be careful 'cause you're using physical memory to create them.
Hope this helps...

:)

If you put the line I suggested in the system.ini file, you don't use up more base RAM, windows will load it in himem.
If you put the STACKS= line into config.sys it will be taken out of the base 64k of RAM, leaving less for other apps/windows.
Cheers,
Jim
