Hi,

Second PC Compaq Deskpro EP PII with 266Mhz.

I checked with Compaq site, crucial.com etc and I should have been able to upgrade RAM from 2 x 64 to 2 x 128. I keep getting incompatible RAM type error on boot up even with just the one 128 installed.

The RAM is OK and works fine in another PC so I suspected old (5yrs) BIOS so I flashed the latest version from the Compaq/HP site and still the same!

RAM is a PC100 type which is the same as the Compaq original 64M so I don't believe there is a conflict.

I'm confused and be grateful for any guidance from the experts!

Pete

Compaq is notorious for accepting ram, took me several different brands of ram before it took on my presarios. are you using double density, two-sided ram. are you sure it is seated properly- takes a little force to get it to snap in. PEARL LOL

I agree with kilo. Compaq and memory are famous for its querks. You may have to purchase compaq memory specific from the memory manufacturer. They make it for sure. Then just be sure that you are using what is recomended in the correct slots. The double sided has a certain configuration as the single sided memory does and can go only in certain slots on certain motherboards. Welcome to the wonderful world of computers. Let everything that have breath praise the Lord.
