incoming/outgoing email issues 1

Ok, I'm a noob with Exchange and am trying to set it up for a friend's business. I know it's complex but they just need simple pop and smtp email support. But I was having issues receiving mail, I could send anywhere, just not receive it. I think the problems lie with the fact that the pop and smtp servers are on different domains. Since I'm new to this software I am not sure what else to include but does anyone have any ideas on how to retrieve the mail and distribute to appropriate email boxes on the server?

you need to make sure that the following is set up.

1) the external DNS MX records point to your Exchange server.
2) that a recipient policy has the domain name for the domain you are trying to receive.

I believe a guy at work solved all my issues...first thing, I do have an mx record but forgot that because it's at a different location and thus, ip address (and different isp) that i won't be able to receive email. He did tell me to send an email to user@external_ipaddress. It sent out and received an NDR that said: "The destination server for the recipient could not be found in the dns." Does this mean that I need to remove the dns entries from the smtp virtual server? Or just get it to the correct location and ip and all should work fine?

Well, I figured I'd update you all since I like knowing what the solution was in other topics (new to exchange though). I needed poproute, a free app that collects mail from a pop account and distributes it to appropiate mailboxes.
