I installed a new hard drive and used my old one for a slave. I installed Windows XP Pro and Office XP. In outlook I tried to import my contacts and I can not find any PST files on my old hard drive. The old hard drive had Windows 2000 Pro upgraded to Windows XP Pro. I need to get my contacts imported. I have searched for "outlook*.*", "backup*.*", "archive*.*" in every combination that I can think of. The old hard will no longer boot up, but I can see all the files and folders.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Look for files called *.dbx

Back up copy the old ones to a safe location and copy the other ones into the folder for outlook to use...
should work. If not...you can restore from the backup copies. Kimber

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

Thanks for the tip, but the only dbx files that I could find were in the outlook express directory. I tried to import them anyway but no help. I would appreciate any other tip that anyone has

are you able to boot from the old hard drive long enough to export a file from Outlook?
That would be a fast way to solve this one. Kimber

Try exploring drive:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook for *.pab or *.ost *.pst files.

The reason, I say 'exploring' is because there have been problems with XP's search function in the past & I'm not conviced that SP1 fixed it. Exploring would also confirm that you have permission to access the neccessary folders (if you don't have an admin account). I think search will not look in any folders you don't have permissions for.
