How do I import Excel spreadsheets and charts (graphs) into a Quark 4.1 document? What if some of the spreadsheets are linked?

I don't know of any straight inport software. However you can do a number of things to get the spread sheets and charts in to Quark:

1. Take screen shots of the pages. (Command + Shift + 3)
2. Make ps files of the pages, convert to PDF, then on in Photoshop and save as tiffs or Eps.
3. Repeat step 2 but leave them as PDF's.
4. Copy and Paste works with the charts, however not a good idea if going to print it leaves them as indexs colour. If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

You can save them as Word docs and bring them in using the Word filter. If they are linked, Quark won't do the update as it doesn't support OLE.

While there are table extensions for Quark, including what's included in Quark 5, I don't think any of them directly import from Excel. (I'd be glad to be wrong on this.)

Usually I export the spreadsheets as tabbed text, then import them into a Quark text box.

The graphs, as P20 mentioned, are kind of useless for printing, but those workaround will (kind of) work, with unknown friendliness when you go to output, depending on what you're feeding it to. I almost always rebuild graphs in Illustrator so I have more control of color, line weight and fonts.

Simple bar graphs could be built in Quark (drawing boxes), if you have the data. I've even scripted a few solutions that way. And Illustrator is now scriptable, but that functionality doesn't extend to the graphing module, so you would have to write a script to draw primitives such as bars and pie shapes.

Thanks to George Mack and others. I tried most of these but not scripting (I'm not that good). The only successful charts (spreadsheets were no problem apart from a bit of re-formatting) I did straight copy and paste from Excel to Quark (v.4.1). A few went in fine, but most crashed Quark (and the Scrapbook) or froze the Mac. But the successful ones were not real files, as I found from Picture Usage; copying them out of Quark into Photoshop got them sorted.
Still, there must be plenty of jobs on financiaql press etc where importing Excel and other graphs is run-of-the-mill....?
