Hello.
I have this strange situation since i installed XP Home on my DELL Dimension. After install, i just updated the drivers (Intel, audio, video, network), installed NAV 2003 (from my Dell CD). After restart, the setup wizard from NAV hasn't continued and the NAV Autoprotect was disabled. I tried to reach it in the tray but it suddenly dissapeared. I ran regedit to see what happens in "Run". On my way to "run" :) regedit automatically closed.
I tried Windows Update (Official Site) and downloaded the updates (criticals). It did installed some of them but some not. Tried again and again and nothing. Microsoft came with a solution (Q814033_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU) but it automatically closes down before it should end.
What can be? (Note: I had a full scan from another computer with updated vir defs and 0 viruses).
<sigh>.

Thank you anyway for just being here!

I'm like 99% sure its a virus or trojan. Try going to and running the free housecall scanner. I've seen this like hundreds of times now.

I agree with "jsauce" you are going to have to rid your machine of these infections so that you can then install your virus scanner and do your updates. Use the online scanners and other removal tools from this thread.

Before Posting a Hijack log file - Best Practices
faq608-4650

Have you got a firewall installed? Don't surf without one, it only takes a second to get infected and there is so much out there that it is unavoidable without a firewall.

What you could do, alternatively, if you have just installed XP, is to reformat the drive and reinstall. This would give you a fresh start. Then set up all your protection before going online.

I just scanned my computer on :) ... still nothing. I think it's a matter of corrupted registry or .ini files. Nevertheless, i don't know (ever met) this issue and any information about the reasons NAV corrupted my regs. (just a guess, even if a wild one:)).
Thanks a lot for your help!
I do apreciate!

Got any other ideeas?:)

Might be an occasion where posting the "Hijack This" log might help solve your problem.
