i am using a Redhat 9.0 system as an FTP server. I would like to know it is possible to imbed the password and user id into a link for the site, so whomever we send it to will not have to enter a login name and password.

thanks

david

i wanted to do it this way and not with anonymous because i am going to be having a series of one time only users that will need access to the FTP site.

also id rather not set up seperate user accounts since they will be one time users only.

anonymous is out because i dont want just anyone getting access to the site.

thanks for the help :)

providing login information through the link is a security no-no

If you're determined to do so I'd advise you to see if you have /bin/false

If so create a new account specificly for this and as root (su) edit the terminal type for the user in /etc/passwd

from /bin/bash (or whatever it's set to)
to /bin/false

This will allow ftp logins, but will not allow terminal sessions (telnet, ssh, etc)to atleast provide a little protection

** just a suggestion **
