Imaging Small Old Disk to Large New Disk

Hi All,
I have a older AMD 500+ with one 4 gig drive C: and a second
6 gig drive F: running Windows XP Home Edition.
Drive C: has been acting up, running chkdsk during startup and causing the system to crash. The System shuts down and at times is difficult to boot up. I have programs on drive C: that came with the computer that I don't have the disks for. I am worried about losing those programs. I am thinking of purchasing a 40 gig hard drive. Is there a way I can copy my existing programs & files to the new hard drive without losing the programs I do not have disks for.

It's possible to image your samller drive onto a larger drive IF there are no other changes to the configuration of your computer (ie new mobo, proc, etc). Also, keep in mind that your image will only be as good as the original... any faults you have now will be on the image and will be on the 40 gig drive you put that image on.

If you've got Symantec Ghost (7.5 is real nice) then that will work. It also has a feature to check the image's integrity too. Before you do anything though, make sure you know exactly all of your components are before you start ghosting (proc, nic, mobo, any other unique items that may/may not need specific drivers for).

Chances are that if the disk's got problems the imaging software may not be able to cope with it. I've found this to be a problem with both Ghost and Drive Image... Also, be aware that XP will invite you to re-register as it'll have detected a change of hardware (new HDD).
