What sort of pics are you inserting into the Word doc? TIFs? EPS? JPGs? GIFs? WMFs? Are they colour or greyscale? How large are the pic files?
What sort of settings are you using for Distiller when you make the PDF? I am not sure how V6 is set up, but in V5, you need to select the compression of pixel-based images.
