Hey Guys....I've finally got a new ISP after along time without the internet. It's good to be back.

Anyways I have a boot up problem...

When i went to boot up my computer it said that there was a problem with the registry and to use ScanReg so I did, now since I have done that everytime I try to boot up normally the computer says " Unable to initialize virus scaning engine database" and the computer hangs with this posted and there is a blue/grey/red background. The computer just locks up and I can't boot up unless I hit restart and go into safe-mode.

Can anyone help me with my problem? Thanks... Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

This background screen is reminiscent of a DOS warning screen, which would fit with a virus infection.

To be on the safe side, I would recommend that you boot to DOS and at the prompt type in: SCANREG /RESTORE and then choose a date from the entries presented when the PC was OK.

If that boots OK, make sure that you do a full scan for virii. COFFEE.EXE missing - Insert Cup and Press Any Key.

What about uninstalling NAV, then reboot, then reboot 2nd time and reinstall. SENILE.COM found... Out Of Memory...

From a SASANAC, here's the fix:

When "Unable to initialize the Virus Scanning engine database files" appears while Windows is starting. Pressing the O key for OK is the only option. Pressing the O key allows the computer to start normally. NAV becomes disabled.

Take the following steps to download and run the Symantec Hawkings tool, using IE, or NETSCAPE. NOT AOL.

Normally, NAV Auto-Protect is disabled if this issue occurs. If Auto-Protect is disabled, continue with step 2, and in the system tray by the clock, a red X appears over the icon for Auto-Protect. If Auto-Protect is enabled, disable Auto-protect. Steps to disable Auto-Protect:

In the system tray by the clock, double-click the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect icon.
In the Norton AntiVirus window, double-click Real Time Scanning (Auto-Protect).
In the System Status Details window, click Yes to disable Auto-Protect.
Close the Norton AntiVirus window.

Connect to the Internet.

In the Address or Location box of the Web browser, type: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/winme/HawkingTool.exe. Press the ENTER key.

In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

In the Save As dialog box, click the Save In list, and then click Desktop.

In the Save As dialog box, click Save.

In the Download Complete dialog box, click Close.

Next to the Start button in the Quick Launch area, click the Show Desktop icon.

On the desktop, double-click HawkingTool.exe.

The HawkingTool should launch LiveUpdate automatically. If LiveUpdate does not launch, from the Start menu, point to Programs, Norton AntiVirus, and then click LiveUpdate - Norton AntiVirus.

In the LiveUpdate dialog box, click Next.

The LiveUpdate dialog box displays a list of updates. Click Next. The updates download.

In the Please Read dialog box, click OK.

In the LiveUpdate dialog box, click Finish to complete the installation of the updates.

In the Reboot Required dialog box, click OK.

The live update process may have to be repeated a couple of times to bring the Norton AntiVirus program up to the latest version. The Norton AntiVirus program updates incrementally.

Never say Die (note to me, write to Albert Broccolli, could be a 007 title)

I found this for you.

"Unable To Initialize The Virus Scanning Engine Database Files"

A: This problem can crop up after a System Restore. Symantec has posted fixes for two related issues:
"Cannot enable Auto-Protect after updating virus definitions or running Windows Me Restore" Link and PDF File with information.
"NAV Auto-Protect unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files" when starting the computer after running System Restore" PDF File
Here is the procedure:

1. Right-click the Norton AntiVirus icon in the system tray, and then click Disable Auto-Protect.

2. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs

3. In the right pane, locate the numbered folders.

4. Delete each one. Do not delete any of the other folders.

5. Close Windows Explorer.

6. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.

7. Make sure that Look in is set to (C:).

8. In the "Search for files or folders named" box, type--or copy and paste--the following, and then click Search Now:
livetri.zip settings.liveupdate

9. Delete any files that are found.

10. Run LiveUpdate to download new virus definitions.

Please say it worked, I'm getting older and crustier than ever on this one.
