Hello,

At my office I use IIS 5 (Win 2000 pro) and IIS 5.1 in Win XP Pro so far.

There's a friend told me to install IIS 6 for the win XP machine. He said, after instalation i will find both versions of IIS will be installed on the system, in Computers Magagement I will find the 5.1 version remains there, but in Internet Information Service, i will find the version 6.

I dont have any idea about this at all. i dont know how possible having 2 versions of IIS installed in one system?
Why the 5.1 one is still there after version 6 is installed?

Version 6 is came with Windows 2003 server, but I dont have any idea what adventages we get by installing it together with IIS 5.1, and what is the surplus of the version 6?

Forgive me for my Ignorance...
Anyone can explain?
Thanks

Each version of IIS are designed specifically for a certain OS. 5.1 is designed for use ONLY with XP Professional, for example. it IS possible to use different versions on differnet OS's however, it is not recommended and can caused unwanted problems.

If you dont mind me asking, what is the reason you would want two versions installed within the same os, at the same time??

Oh, IIS6 has many advantages on IIS5.1. To name a few is multiple web site hosting (also in w2k server) and application pools (w2k3 only).

But then, as gwrobar said, IIS5 only on w2k -though difference between pro and server-, IIS5.1 only on winxp, IIS6 only on w2k3.

Hth,

Yes, Beboen is correct, if you want the benefits of IIS 6, change your OS

if you dont want to give up XP, try installing both os's (following instructions from MS documentation), and then check out Ms virtual machine. it will allow two OS to be run at the same time, thus, you'll be able to use xp for regular computing, and have win2003server running with IIS6 as your server

Thanks Gary and Beboen,

@Gary, Actually i dont have any reason to have two IIS versions installed in the same os, like i said, it was just someone told me that :) , so i got curious about IIS6 and its adventages.

Well, so one of them is possible for multiple website then... interesting... but it should run on win2003server. I will try it one day...

Thanks a lot...

Regards
Heddy
