what's the proper syntax for this, please and thankyou:

if (a1=NaN) {
a1=0;
}

//should nan be in quotes?

Whoops.. you actually want

if ( isNaN(a1) ) {
    a1 = 0;
}

You were assigning "NaN" to "a1":

a1=NaN[/quote]

You should have used two equals signs to test rather than to assign:

[code]a1 [!]==[/!] NaN[/quote]
