I have a web server - widows 2000 server with iis installed.

I tried to access some of the web applications on this server and when I typed the server name they didn't work by when I typed IP address my applications worked fine.

why is that? How can I solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

I never got the problem, yes, its sounds a bit strange to me. Usually Once it works, it will work in three ways :
- Local (localhost, the server name or IP address)
- in LAN (Local IP address or name of the server)
- in WAN (WAN IP address ~ for this one, i surelly cant access the site with the 'local name')

But i'm curious, do you have multiple IP addresses installed in that server?

sorry, sure i didnt mean 'localhost' for ASP or PHP, but IP and name are should be identic. Anyway for me, using the server name is the first choice to make a connection (such as connection strings).

when I open IIS for that web server I see there is a star sign in front of the web server name *.

like: * MyWebServerName

Do you know what does the star sign means in front of the web server name.

Thank you

Oh, I figured out why it works when I type IP address...
I had two IP addresses under the same server name...

That's why it didn't work

Well, I thought that before, you have multiple IP addresses installed in the server...

About the star, normally it shows (which) the web site is active (opened). It seems the IIS handles the task for more than single web site in it.
