Hijacking of the Internet Explorer application has corrupted the Internet Explorer on an XP Pro system. I have cleaned out the hijacking with Spy Bot S&D and AdAware, and have removed the hidden files the hijacker installed, but the IE 6.0 has been damaged by the hijacking software. Launching IE fails with a request to send notification to microsoft. Removal of the hijacking files still produces the notification message to send to Microsoft, but at least the IE application does come up now and runs, so I am able to get to Mocrosoft to download patches again. However, all my attempts to install IE6 SP1 to repair the IE installation fail, so I have been unable to get IE6 SP1 to install on XP Pro system (XP is at SP1 level).

I get the error message "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo Testing" and the install fails.

I found the Microsoft article 822798 (You cannot install some updates or programs) and have done different steps listed with no change to my situation.

I also got Microsoft article 828031 which references having the KB823559 security patch installed as causing the problem. I have removed the security patch (it was installed) but problem still persists.

I have wasted several long days without being able to solve the problem, and have run out of ideas to try, short of totally rebuilding the system (and user does not have all the software he has installed on the system available, of course).

In desperation, I have been backing out other patches and updates to the system, and was successful in getting XP SP1 to run yesterday. The SP took over four hours to complete, but it finally did, so the system should now be a good build at SP1 level, but the IE 6 SP1 install still fails.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas on other steps to take.

There are several potential reasons you may encounter this error message.

I just do exactly

And I mean exactly. Be inside the download directory when you run the command.

Thanks for the tip bcastner. Article 811263 was superceeded by the 822798 article, and I already ran all the setups suggested there, and this did not fix the problem.

I will, however, attempt to download the full IE6 to cd as per your second link, and then try first to re-install IE6, then try to see if the problem with its loading is fixed before I try to go to IE6 SP1. However, I still do need to get to the IE6 SP1 level to fix the security holes in IE6.

Thanks again, I will let you know what happens tomorrow.

XP's SP1 would have made IE6 SP1 as that is part of XP. You can confirm your version of IE6 by clicking on Help in IE, then "About Internet Explorer".

4 hours to install SP1 is too long. It indicates other serious problems.

Make sure you are clean of all infections by following this FAQ.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

What does Windows Update suggest?

Between the November, 2003 Cumulative Update, and the February, 2004 Cumulative Update for IE, you should be current.

Linney,

Good tips. I will verify that once the user brings back his system. System was only at IE.6.0, no SP before.

Of course, I like the idea of running the repair of windows over itself, but I need the user to produce the CD used to install the os in the first place, with the right serial number, etc. :)

I am hoping the reinstall of XPSP1, because it did finish without errors, will have corrected the components which had been damaged by the hijacking. Only time will tell. My gut feeling is to wipe the system and start over, but you should hear the user scream when I tell hm he would lose all the "additions" he has made to the system! I first need to make space to back up his many GB of data, etc., before trying this overwrite, just in case.

Many Thanks for th einput.

David

Linney,

Gave you a star, the application from the posting you listed found two more hijack programs and corrected 18 IE registry entries! IE works like a charm again now. After that I still had to remove and reinstall my CommandCom anti-virus software, the hijack had messed it up also.

Many thanks for the post.
