The system is a fully patched Win2000 SP4 with fully patched Internet Explorer 6 SP1.

When Internet Explorer is started, its window with all the control features is painted but it takes several minutes to get the focus. Once this happens, IE behaves normally UNTIL you open another IE window when it gets glued up again. Again, after patiently waiting, IE does its browsing stuff and behaves as it should.

I'm missing something right in front of my nose but I just can't see it.

Afterthought: home page is set to 'about.blank'.

what happens if you give it a proper home page?

any entries in event log (eg, application hang, iexplore.exe)?

Have you tried IE's repair feature?

Do you have firefox installed - if so, does it behave similarly? If not, install and try it.

Any other unusual behaviour? (good AV and anti-spyware installed? Firewall?)

Thanks wolluf. That gives me something to go on. I didn't consider that IE had a repair feature. I see that it's in add/remove programs so next time I get a hold of my dearest sister-in-law's laptop, I will pursue that course of action.

Opera 9.27 is also on her machine and it functions flawlessly. She just seems to use IE from habit and will need more persuasion I think.

Outlook Express 6 also behaves perfectly well.
