IE Menus and Dialogs Appear in German!!! 1

Hi,

For some reason... I don't know what triggered it... my Internet Explorer Menus, Dialogs, and Context Menus are appearing in German!?!?!?

Could a virus have triggered this? I've only recently upgraded from Win98SE to XP and this is really the only problem I've had.

I have checked all the language setting and all (that I could find) are set correctly to Engligh (UK).

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Internet Explorer, I also tried installing all the service packs ... none have had any effect.

Any help / advice would be appreciated

Hi,

THanks but I've already seen this thread and tried all the suggestions. There must be something else.

As I said before the problem only seems to be affecting the Menus and Dialogs. Is there not a registry key which would address this?

This is a known Issue. Do the following to resolve it:
1.. Open Internet Explorer.
2.. Click Tools.
3.. Click Internet Options.
4.. Click the General tab, and then click Languages.
5.. Remove any languages that you do not want to use for the Windows Update site or click English, and then click Move Up to move English to the top of the list of languages.
You may also have to change the encoding in your browser to correspond with changes to the language preference.
In Internet Explorer, click View, click Encoding, and then click the encoding option that corresponds to the preferred language for Internet Explorer (for example, for English select Western European Windows).

Hi,

Thanks but this doesn't really address my problem.

My problem relates to the menu text and the dialog box text in Internet Explorer. NOT the actual web page text. The KB Article is about the MS Update Site.

To uninstall German Menus and Dialogs for Internet Explorer quickly and easily using Windows Update:
1. Go to the Product Updates page.
2. Be sure to click Yes if a message prompt appears.
3. When the Product Updates page appears, click the Show Installed Updates button at the top of the page.
4. Click the Uninstall button to the right of the German Menus and Dialogs for Internet Explorer description.

To uninstall German Menus and Dialogs for Internet Explorer when you are not online:

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select German Menus and Dialogs for Internet Explorer.
4. Click Add/Remove.

I'll try this when I get home tonight.

Just one thing though, I know I haven't installed any German Windows updates!?!? If I haven't installed any then there won't be any listed... right?

So... hyperthetically... if they're not listed then what next??

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but as I thought, the German Menus and Dialogs option wasn't in either of the lists (MS Update, or the Add/Remove Programs)

Any other ideas?

Is there a English Menus and Dialogs I could maybe install over the top to override the current settings??

Start, Run and type:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

(in one long line. Just copy/paste the above entry)

Hi,

I don't know what that actually did but I'm afraid It hasn't solved the problem.

The process asked me for both the XP cd's and the XP Service Pack 1 files. I rebooted but I can't see any visible difference... the things still in German.

Still nothing I'm afraid... the program ran ok and then closed without any messages.

However after a restart the menus and dialogs still appear in German.

Could there be any other possible solutions?

Just some odd ball guesses to try.

Bring up the Language Preference box via Internet Options.

What language does it mention with the blurb "Menus and Dialog boxes are currently displayed in......" just above the OK button?

Above that where you can add a language try adding all the German ones. Reboot, then go back and make sure English is at the top of the list. See how it goes, if no change, remove all except English and reboot.


Another thing to try is to uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions" from Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced.

Specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off.

The menu and dialogue boxes have to be coming from one of the Hotfixes being applied. This is not a small settings change, but literally the replacement of several components of IE in order to show German (approximately 1.2 Megabytes of files need to be replaced). Linney is correct that you can do the replacement language through Internet Options, Languages, as it will direct you to the MS Download site when you do the Add. If anything, I would try adding English!

In updating through Windows Update, make sure that System Restore is active on your system. Check the updates one by one to make sure the issue does not repeat. If so, note the Hotfix and uninstall it.

SUCCESS!!!!

Thankyou soooo much, the Microsoft link provided the fix. I installed a fresh version of IE (downloaded) after editing the registry key, and after a Windows Logo problem (supposedly IE 6 isn't certified for XP.... ? ) A reboot produced a sight for sore eyes.... ENGLISH MENUS!!!!
