IE keeps opening up

Ok, this one is driving me nuts. IE will automatically open up at any given time. Anytime you click a link, do a search, or type a new addy in the address bar, you get 2 extra IE's opening up to the homepage. What I have done so far to correct:
-Ran Adaware and Spybot
-Ran Trendmicro and Mcafee (Mcafee picked up a file infected with virus js IEstart.gen.d which it removed, but I think that might be a clue to the problem)
-ran winsockfix
-Reset the Start Page in registry

Anybody have any suggestions, or have run into this?

Sure sounds like spyware to me.

My suggestion:
Download and run a program called 'Hijack This'

It will create a log file.

Post the log file to the Virus/Spyware forum:

http://www.tek-tips.com/threadminder.cfm?spid=760

The folks there are very good at dealing with this.

Hijack this isnt the world most userfriendly programs to use yes its great if you know how to use it. I would try using some spyware removal software such as SPYBot SD and/or Adaware, as these are easy to use programs.

Spybot-S&D
Adaware

If you run these programs and then still have the problem use hijack this.

I solved it, and this is what did it:

I renamed the file mscmsg to bakmscmsg. IE is behaving well now. What does that file do? I have no idea!

Excellent advice, but, darb66 says he ran spybot and adaware in the first post.

You may still have some spyware issues.
Another excellent program to try is CWS Shredder.
If I were you, I would still run Hijack This.
