Error recieved from IE when URL=

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

When I chang teh URL to use IP address instead:
IE works as expected, is this an IE setting or a unix server problem?

Sounds like you don't have the address for your DNS (Domain Name Server, it tells you that gr3.greth.com is at IP address 192.168.2.3).

If this is inside your network and not out on the Internet you can add the name and address to your HOSTS file (in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder).

Use NOTEPAD to edit/create HOSTS (no extension). Put in an entry like...

192.168.2.3 gr3.greth.com

If this is an Internet problem you will have to contact your ISP and get their DNS IP Addresses. New Zealand, a great place to visit.

darranagl
have added the new file hosts (with no extension) and input the following
192.168.2.3 gr3.greth.com

I have rebooted my PC and I am still getting the following error, the PC isnt on the internet it is on the company intranet, any ideas?

While trying to retrieve the URL:

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for wo3.woeth.com
The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

Try putting the HOSTS file into the \WINDOWS folder (I was very tired late night and said to put it in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM, sorry). Check to make sure that NOTEPAD didn't put a .TXT as the extension (it does that sometimes).

Once you have done that open a dos prompt and type

PING gr3.greth.com

and see if it returns the IP Address and gets an answer. New Zealand, a great place to visit.
