"I have been having problems with internet explorer 6 freezing and not responding when a new browser window opens. I'm running Win98 SE, 128 MB RAM, AMD Athalon Processor. Any ideas of what could be wrong and how to fix? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE and also emptying my cache. Thanks."
Unfortunately, I have been having what I deem to be a very similar problem. I too am running Win98 SE and have 128 MB RAM. However, I have a pentium III processor. On my computer, webpages don't always freeze as yours do, but they do freeze in other ways. For example, if I am filling out a registration form online and it asks for first name, last name, etc., each time I finish filling in a blank and click on the next one (or hit tab, for that matter) explorer freezes for a good 5-10 seconds before moving onto the next space.
Since explorer had never done this before, I thought perhaps it would go away. But here I am a week later, and it's still doing it. The only lead I have is that I had uninstalled my virus scanner several months ago without reinstalling a different one (extremely bad move, I might add) and because of all the problems I was having with explorer, I decided to install a virus scanner and run it. Well lo and behold it found a virus - W32.FunLov.4099, to be exact. I cleaned it completely off of my system, but still, nothing has changed, so I believe the virus was not causing the issue.
Now, I had never been to the site before these other problems started, but when I try to use
a microsoft webpage, certain screens freeze up on me completely. Since I tend to be an avoider rather than a confronter when it comes to issues like these, I tried several other web browsers as well. They don't freeze, but I also can't use them on the zone because microsoft doesn't support them (go figure).
I apologize for the lengthy response, but I was hoping with a few more details maybe someone can solve our problem.
Oh, one more thing. I completely reinstalled Windows 98 SE last night to see if it would fix anything and it did not.
Any responses much appreciated.
