I have a large folder on my system called _RESTORE - this folder, and its subfolders, are hidden by default. One of its subfolders is called TEMP - the TEMP folder contains many files all with the .CPY extension, some of which are very large in size. They have a variety of creation dates

Question: how have these files been created and are they safe to delete?

Thanks

These are files made by System Restore establishing restore points. Sometimes the restore points really accumulate. And if you get a virus, sometimes they get archived there too, see thread748-769075. The way to get rid of all these files clogging up your hard drive is to turn off System Restore, reboot at least once or maybe twice, then turn it back on if you wish it back on. Advantages and disadvantages to using it, so you decide.

To dbMark:

Many thanks for your speedy reply. I have looked at my System Restore properties - because the available disk space was less than 200Mb the System Restore was already 'disabled'. I rebooted the system which freed up lots of space so now I have set System Restore to 'disabled' again. I also tried the System Restore facility but it failed to successfully perform the restore

I have since rebooted the system a number of times but the space taken up by the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder stays at 6,348Mb - folder only contains *.CPY files. As my total disc space is only 9,717Mb I need to delete these *.CPY files if it is safe to do so. Since I have been unable to perform a System Restore, is it now safe to delete the newer .CPY files and recover the disc space

Many thanks

I would say get rid of that crud
But you may want to organize the files by DATE, by clicking the Date bar..and just save some recent entries/dated files..as a precaution.

Keep all the dated files together (for ex; 9/25/04), and don't reorganize the directory structure (meaning don't move them to other folders).

You NEED to free up some disk space

To TekTippy4U:

Many thanks for the suggestion. I have sorted them by creation date, and deleted all except the most recent six files, as a precaution. The system reboots correctly and I have now turned 'System Restore' back on

Thank you for your support
