IDE Hard drive compatibilty 2

Hi there - I need to buy a new hard drive for a dell dimension 4100 - p3 1gb - desktop machine.

Dell have quoted £140 which seems too much to me - i'm thinking that this drive may do the job, but don't understand if it's going to be compatible - can anyone help?

If the specs on the new HD are the same(or lower) as the existing one, then the new one should work just fine.

the drive is the same size - but don't i have to worry about whether it's udma or ata etc etc?

or are all ide drives basically compatible?

If your current disk is 40GB then you should be fine with any other 40 or 60GB ATA/IDE disk (probably ok to 120GB); just make sure it is not a SATA drive.

Because, if this is your boot drive, you are going to reload the operating system. And in the process you are going to either use the DELL defaults if it is a restore, or you get to make some choices if it is a full or OEM install.

If you already have a 40gig installed then this 80gig Westerndigital should work just fine and at just £7 more for double the capacity it is certainly a good value branded replacement.
It is a standard ATA 100 drive, like the one you already have and has a fast 7,200rpm spin speed plus twice the capacity.

As Ed has pointed out you will need to reload your operating system, drivers and applications.

Some modern Dells have the Restore data in a hidden partition; if this is the case (I doubt it!) you may need to use Ghost from Symantec.

The drive from Komplett should be fine (Interface Type ATA-100; Connector 40 PIN IDC), as should Martin's (paparazi) suggestion.
