Big debate time and not a clear issue as you will find out from other comments to come but given your configuration I would leave the hard drive on it's own as Primary master putting the Writer and DVD as Secondary Master and slave.
It is generally accepted that the IDE channel will run at the rate of the slowest device on it and roms devices tend to be ATA33 where as modern hard drives are mostly ATA100 and can be 133. Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.
What you are suggesting is the best compromise, Martin.
More specifically, if you put the DVD and CD-RW on the same IDE channel, then direct CD copying will be slow - you may find that your burner cannot write at its maximum speed.
However, putting a Rom device on the same IDE as a HDD will slow overall performance. Not ideal.
The ultimate solution is to put each disk on its own channel.
An IDE Add-on card will give extra IDE channels for a reasonable amount - about £25 last time I looked.
Thanks for all the advice,But now I must complicate the problem I have a gigabyte GA-8IRXP motherboard that has 4 IDE channels 3 and for being for the raid funtion which I did not intend to use. Is it possible to use 3 and 4 if I am not going the raid route?

goense - yes, that's perfect. Put the Hdd on RAID channel 1, and split the Roms between the remaining IDE channels. This is the setup I use on my KG7-RAID board.
crisc - depends what level of SCSI. If you use the early 20Mb/sec SCSI, then ATA100 blows it out of the water. The later USCSI @ 40Mb/sec is also slower.
Now, if you mean UW SCSI, at a POTENTIAL 160Mb/sec, then you'd be right.
As it is, a fast UW controller and UW disks (10k-15k models) are far too expensive for most of us. The controller alone is more expensive than a pair of IDE disks.
So, bang for buck, ATA 100 is better than SCSI (any level). You're comparing Porsches with Volkswagens.
