I have two WIN 2000 Pro computers connected with a cross over cable. I had dial up using ISC and now switched to DSL.The Modem is connected to the computer by a USB cable. I wan't to share the internet with the other computer with ICS again. Now with the Modem being connected to the Host Computer with the USB cable I won't need two NEC cards. I forgot, I don't want to use a HUB or Router because of the cost factor. The computers can still see each other and share files but I can't get the internet to share. Any sugestions.

Thanks in advance

You speak of expense with using a router. Actually, you can get a good filrewall router for $50 or less on sale or with coupon. I use teh SMC barricade with a 4 port 10/100 switch built in. and it has a built in print server also, so both machines can use the same printer without having to have it hog recourses from teh host each time someone elase prints to it.

As far as the second nic card, those are very cheap.

There are multiple benefits to using a router switch combo, not the least of which is the added security of the hardware firewall.

Aslo with a switch, both of your computers will be faster since they will both get teh full bandwidth instead of splitting in hald with a hub.

Happy computing and good luck True knowlege is not the knowing in and of itself, but in the knowing of how and where to find the answers.

You can't get this to work Spool (or, if you have, please fill us in on how) because of the virtual network interface associated with the USB Modem. If your ISP will allow it, trade your modem in for one with an RJ45 connection - you will have no trouble then. What most ICS software wants is a TCP/IP address of the gateway NIC, and you don't have such a thing with a USB modem.

And as a note - I'd buy a gateway/router, and I wouldn't let cost be a factor. I have three computers on a network here through a GVC IP0006 and my DSL is on the uplink port - and things work 110% perfectly with no glitches or screw-ups at all. Personally I've never had good luck with Sygate-type software or Microsoft's ICS stuff.

My 3 cents worth. PleaseDeleteMe is right on target. ICS should work however.

Thanks for your sugestion. I also have all the right stuff on my own network. This set up that I am trying is for my son's computer who lives 1000 miles from me so everything is being done by phone. If I had his computers here with me this would be done already. He is short on cash so for the time being I wanted to try out ICS with his new DSL service. Dial up ISP worked fine with ICS. The modem does have A RJ45 connection on it. If the Modem is connected to the computer with the RJ45 cable then he can't connect to his other computer he will just have Internet. If I use the USB connection it comes with I can then use the network cable ( Cross Over RJ45)to connect to his other computer and share the internet and files. I was just asking if this can be done with my earlier post. I found out that it can so when I get it set up I will post back with the outcome and how I did it. So check back every once in a while. Thanks again
