Have this nagging problem.

3 computers connected to a Linksys switch. 1 of them (running XP-Pro,ICS) is the internet gateway.Internet sharing works only when I setup "home network setup". XP prompts that winsock has been changed and that I should restart the PC to reflect the change. Once I restart, internet sharing simply doesnt "share" (ie cant access internet from the other two computers but LAN works.)

Any ideas anyone?
I can't seem to find anything on this in TechNet. Seems that the only help I can get is "how to setup ICS".

Does anyone else have the same problem? Information is free....dont hog it!

I had the same problem and the easyest way is just ICS on the offending Machine Quick and easy

Thanks for the reply, but i dont get what u meant. The problem lies with the internet gatway machine. I've tried redoing the ICS thingy abt 5 times and i get the same result all the time. Information is free....dont hog it!

Sorry typo error what I ment to say was to just start from scratch and reinstall the ICS which will be a lot easier then trying to find a problem.
On the Windows XP desktop, click the Start button.
Select Control Panel.
If the Category View of the Control Panel is displayed, select the Network and Internet Connections option. Then select the Network Connections option listed under the "or Pick a Control Panel icon" section.
If the Classic View of the Control Panel is displayed, select the Network Connections option.
Under the LAN or High-Speed Internet section, right-click on the Connection device[ISP] entry and choose Properties.
Select the Advanced tab. In the Internet Connection Sharing section, check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
Click OK to close the connection properties. You do not need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

I think "Dog" stated he has redone this several times with no success =/

Dog, have you tried installing ICS on another machine?

Also, what type of connection to the internet do you have [ie: 56k/DSL modem, ethernet to broadbandand] and/or are you using two nics in the ICS machine?

You could try manually pointing out your networked clients to the XP's machines NiC. In certain cases this alone will resolve the problem.

Drop us a line back...

zedd's spot on. I've tried manual, with and without the 1394 connection bridge, automatic, and even tired running home network setup from the client PC (one of them is also an XP you see)....still no go. My guess is that the winsock thingy is the prime suspect.

Thanks for your reply...your right abt the two NICs part. One of them is to a cable modem and the other is to a 10/100 5 port switch.

I used to rely on a thrid party proxy sharing back when I was using Windows 2000. I tried that in XP but i think that the firewall thingy is getting in the way of its functions. Of course that is another problem altogether. I usually avoid Windows ICS like the plague since it was introduced in Win98, but one thing that got me trying it is the DHCP feature in XP ICS. Its just plain frustrating that I cannot get it to work properly. Information is free....dont hog it!

Dog...

So the problem is that the PC's see each other using the normal HDD shaers and LAN access, however they cannot connect to the ICS machines Net connex.

I had the same problem. Just stick the ISP DNS servers in the other two machines to access the Net as normal, and then add a secondary dns as supplied by the ISP also.

Solved my problem.

Hope it helps

Cheers

You should not have to use the 1394 bridge. I think I remember having to do this once but it was for some complicated setup i was trying after which I returned it to the normal ICS setup.

As Night stated above, if you are having problems be sure and plug the DNS info into your Client computers otherwise they may have problems forwarding proper UDP-53 dns request info to your server/router-hub/modem [in that order =]

Enabling your MS/XP included firewall should not hamper normal activity/downloads to any of your Client stations which you can test after you niche the current problem.

ICS was to be so easy when introduced but then again...

- It was MS who originally printed this info
